Behind G&R Tavern @ side on Spring St. Matt Kowal’s Open Books deals with the perceived flattening of these books into essential file and format. The information and the container become intermixed, resulting in a composite of imagery, literature, and function. The book as an object, becomes free from its boundaries and contextual meanings. It becomes a printed production.
Matt Kowal is an artist living in Portland, Oregon. He was born in Oberlin, Ohio and has a Bachelors of Fine Art in Photography from Ohio State University. VITALforms \\\ *Office of Collective Play
VITALforms is a collective comprised of Cassandra Troyan and Nicole Langille. On September 26 they float through the sky in a hot-air balloon in an act that utilizes collected texts, poems, letters and improvised speech to make an amplified conversation between two bodies. Situated in close proximity to each other in the balloon basket and at a distance with viewers positioned on the ground, this action examines the vulnerability inherent in speaking, the ways we communicate emotion, and the disconnections made between us--no matter how close or far apart from one another.
Viewers on the ground choose to continue in the conversation as they chase (or not) VITALforms, negotiating with the limitations of moving across the earth’s surface in opposition to the drifting words and unrestricted motion of the two bodies in the hot-air balloon basket, apart together.
JOIN US! Meet on Saturday, September 26 at 4:30 p.m. on the quad on CCAD’s campus, corner of Cleveland Ave. and E. Gay St. The balloon departs at 5:30 p.m. from an undisclosed location. (RAIN DATE: September 27. Same plan.)
